I need a tin of paint - part 2
Welcome to the next exciting installment of paint chat!
We know it’s a bit of a dry subect, but is it quick dry or oil based?
Let’s start with what we stock – as with our emulsion, our paints for woodwork and metal are from Johnstone’s and are split into 2 categories, Quick dry (aka water based) and Oil based (aka hardwearing). But what is the difference? Let’s get stuck in…..
Quick dry – as the name suggests, these paints dry within 1-2 hours and can be re-coated (if required) in 3-4 hours. Low odour and with medium VOCs these clean up with warm soapy water. They are easy to apply and stay fresh without turning yellow over time. Available with a gloss (shiny) or satin (mid-sheen) finish, these paints are best applied with a synthetic brush/roller.
Quick dry primer/undercoat – this provides the perfect base when applied before your topcoat. It can be used on bare timber surfaces.
All of these quick dry products can be used inside or out!

Oil based – hardwearing, durable and long lasting, these solvent based paints are self undercoating and have fantastic covering power! However they contain high level of VOCs so ensure maximum ventilation when applying.
They will dry in 16-24 hours and the smell may linger for a good long while after use. These paints require an air/surface temperature of 10 degrees C or higher before applying
Apply this paint with a brush or roller and clean up with white spirit or turpentine substitute.
The paint is for indoor use and is again available in a gloss or satin finish with an oil based primer available if required.
It can be helpful to know what you are painting over when it comes to wood and metal paints.
Oil based products can be applied over water based.
Water based paint cannot be applied directly over oil based as it will be repelled.
If you want to move from oil based paint to water based, it can be done with the right preparation, but will require sanding, undercoating and top coating. We can sort you out with all the sundries for prepping, applying and cleaning up your paint and, as always, if you need a particular product or are unsure of anything, please just ask. We will always do our best to help you.
